Studying Computers To Learn About Ourselves

Clifford Nass, a communications professor at Stanford University, has been studying the ways humans interact with computers to tease out some of the intricacies of how people relate to each other. He talks about those findings in his new book The Man Who Lied to His Laptop.

This podcast at NPR is a conversation between host, Ira Flatow and Author Ciffford Nass. It is entertaining as well as educational. It includes things I had not considered. Apparently people in Germany complained so much about the voice on the GPS that the cars had to be recalled. People did not want driving directions from a woman. Go figure. Dr. Nass asserts that we consciously or unconsciously form relationships with our machinery. I know that I have spoken out loud to my computer as well as my car before. Give a listen to this at
